Inside the Moonland's Tailor House

Every Moonland garment is sewn in our own tailor house in Ningbo, China.

Ningbo (寧波) sits south of Shanghai and is one of the birthplaces of China’s modern garment industry. For more than a century its ateliers have been known for precise suit making. Historically, Ningbo tailors were among the first to craft western suits for European residents in China and later tailored many pieces for diplomats and officers.

The craft is handed down through apprenticeship. Many master tailors worked for years in Hong Kong and returned after 1997, bringing back decades of experience and a deep command of construction and finish. Moonland’s team grew from these returnees and now brings decades of suit tailoring experience to every piece.

Our team masters the precision required for a perfectly fitted gentleman’s suit, yet they stand out for an exceptional sensitivity to women’s clothing.

Most of our tailors are women. Because they live in and with the female body, they bring an intuitive understanding to women's wear in particular. That sensitivity shows in details the industry often overlooks: how to reduce structural burden while keeping graceful drape, how breasts behave in movement, and where ease must be added so a coat breathes without losing shape.

The house runs as a community. The tailors teach one another, share discoveries and refine techniques together. For consistency, every tailor is required to master a garment from start to finish. When a new pattern arrives, the lead tailor studies the best way to construct it and passes that knowledge on. When someone finds a better method she shares it and the whole house adopts it. This daily practice is how our work refines, piece after piece.

We do not outsource sewing or atomize the work into small tasks. Each tailored Moonland garment is completed by a single tailor over a few hours to a few days, and their names are noted. This traceability is both a mark of quality and a promise to our customers. Knitwear and jersey, which call for specialized machines and techniques, are entrusted to partner workshops using our patterns and selected yarns, always finished to our standards.

When demand rises we expand the tailor team in response to actual needs. New experienced tailors are hired and integrated into the house so capacity grows without sacrificing standards or the culture.
